I was going to order SummerSlam, but I completely spaced out and forgot to get a cable box in time, so I decided to order WWE’s live webcast of the event.

How does this work?

When the PPV starts does a window just pop up?

mss
unsolicited manuscript
literary fiction
contemporary mainstream fiction
charges for standard office expenses.
charges client for shipping and photocopying
obtains clients through solicitation

How do you get referred to an agent?

I’ll leave it for others to define the types of fiction, but I know the others:

mss = manuscripts

unsolicited manuscript = a manuscript the publisher, agent, or editor did not ask you to send

charges for standard office expenses = agent is unwilling to "front" the author the actual costs of photocopies, long distance phone calls, messenger service, etc. and deduct them when the sale is made. (Ask for receipts!) This is a warning sign that the agent *may* be disreputable, inexperienced, or not very good at his or her job.

charges client for shipping and photocopying = agent is unwilling to "front" the writer these costs of doing business as s/he attempts to sell the ms. This is a warning sign that the agent *may* be disreputable, inexperienced, or not very good at his or her job.

obtains clients through solicitation = advertises for clients because s/he can’t get them the normal way. Stay away.

For the fiction writers out there: writer’s workshop?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in writers workshop | 6 Comments »

Have any of you writers done a thorough investigation of the various fiction-writing university workshops available? (I know University of Iowa has a very highly regarded program–is their summer workshop good?)

Better yet, anyone attended a workshop recently? Feedback?

I went to the summer workshop at University of Iowa last year and had a blast. Getting to spend a week away from the world in a situation where nearly everyone I encountered was a fellow writer, was wonderful.

Iowa City has a very nice pedestrian area just across from the main part of campus. You will find no shortage of places to eat or grab a cup of coffee there – not to mention all the bookstores.

The workshops are set up so you have your mornings and evenings free to socialize and do homework. I found myself doing most of that downtown. I’m normally a pretty reserved person, but I found I was usually only in my room to sleep.

The summer workshop is run through the university’s continuing education program, so it’s not exactly an M.F.A. program. Bost of the instructors ARE Iowa Writing Workshop graduates. Some are good teachers. Some are probably better writers. I picked mine out of the catalog just because I liked his course description and wasn’t disappointed. He was fun and laid back, but really knew his stuff too. He was full of suggestions of books to read and things to try in our manuscripts, but always kept it clear that we were the authors of our works and we were the ones who had the final say.

The only caution I have is that the program is expensive (that’s the reason I’m not going again this year.) If you’re willing to shell out $1,000 for a week of "writer camp," then it’s worth it. If you’re looking for a place to sell your book, you’re likely out of luck. The emphasis is on the art and craft of writing, not the ins and outs of the publishing industry (although there’s a little of that too.)

If you go to Iowa, wear your walking shoes and bring plenty of summer clothes because it gets HOT!

The Sky

The book is finished! However, now begins the lengthy process of submitting it to agents and then publishers. Since the Writer’s Market recommends waiting for a decision from one before moving on to another, I should still have plenty of time to finish this picture! ;)

Though it’s a little hard to see in the last shot, hopefully you can guess what I was suggesting using the cirrus clouds. Also, I should probably note for you PhotoShop people: the Blur Tool, used with precision, can greatly help your clouds become convincing.

Oh, and I took a tenday break to try the Free World of Warcraft Trial the internet incessently reminds us of…

What is the market like for freelance writers in the Kansas City area?

Posted on March 29th, 2010 by admin in writers market | 4 Comments »

I’m a experienced journalist (with a few regional awards to my credit) planning to relocate in the near future, and I hope to catch some freelance work. Any responses from knowledgeable people will be appreciated.

I am not an expert (sorry) but I lived in the KC area for 2 years, and one of my best friends freelanced for several magazines and newspapers right out of college (Kansas City Business Journal, The Pitch). I worked in the pharmaceutical industry, and I also knew of quite a few freelancers doing that type of work there too.

I will say, I am not a city person, but Kansas City and surrounding communities are a good place to live, I enjoyed it.
