Microsoft Says Google Blocks Competition in Europe Search Market

Posted on May 12th, 2011 by admin in writers market | No Comments »

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish

Microsoft has fought legal battles with officials in Europe and the United States over competition in the personal computer market. But at the end of March, Microsoft accused Google of being anti-competitive. A complaint to the European Commission accused Google of unfairly controlling the Internet search market in Europe. Google was already talking to the commission about the issue and said it was happy to explain to anyone how its business works. But Google also faced other issues. Gmail users in China began reporting problems with Google’s e-mail service in late February. The problems came as news of the revolutions in the Arab world filled the Internet and there were online calls for protests in China.Google said the government was interfering with its e-mail service. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu called those accusations unacceptable. But Google spokeswoman Jessica Powell said, “This is a government blockage, carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail.” Google is the world leader in Internet search. But in China, the biggest search engine is Baidu. And in late March, China’s largest Internet media company, Sina, dropped Google’s search engine from its website. Sina said it would use its own technology. An estimated four hundred fifty million Chinese are online — about half of all Internet users in Asia.In two thousand ten, Google said a cyberattack from China had attempted to get information from the Gmail accounts of human rights activists. Google also expressed concerns about censorship. So Google relocated its Chinese search engine from the mainland to Hong Kong. In March, Google also faced new problems at home. A federal judge in New York ruled against its plan to put millions of books online. Google wants to create a digital library of all the world’s books. It reached a one hundred twenty-five million dollar deal in two thousand eight with groups representing writers and publishers. Google agreed to create a system to pay copyright holders when their works are used online. But Judge Denny Chin rejected the proposed settlement. He said it would give Google monopoly control of the book search market. But he left open the possibility for a new plan.On a similar issue, Baidu in China said it removed almost three million documents from its library. Writers have complained that Baidu did not have permission for their works to appear on its document-sharing site. For VOA Special English, I’m Alex Villarreal. Madison Meltz plays music at Maitland’s Sunday Farmers Market

Posted on November 29th, 2010 by admin in writers market | 1 Comment »

Madison Meltz age 12 performs her music at The Maitland Farmers Market.

Performing Arts of Maitland created this musical addition to Maitland’s Farmers Market and continues to bring fresh, vibrant and exciting talent to Maitland on every Farmers Market.Sunday.

This umbrella organization is determined that the arts continue to play an integral role in helping the Maitland community establish and maintain its cultural identity. On this site you will find information on the Maitland Symphony Orchestra (MSO), the Maitland Farmers Market (M3), the Maitland Poets and Writers (MPW) and the Maitland Stage Band (MSB). Other groups that have been supported by PAM are the Maitland Youth Community Choir (MYcc), and the Resonance Maitland Handbell Ensemble (RMHE). Performing Arts of Maitland (PAM), became the City of Maitlands 4th Cultural Partner in December 2006. City staff and community members assisted Jefferson S. Flowers, PAMs founder, in obtaining 501(c)(3) status by donating their time and resources. With the City as the major funding contributor at this time, the goal is to have a focal point to join with our children and our neighbors to interact with on a human scale, to know each other and learn from each other. Musicians and performers of all ages share their talents and help bring the arts in their many varieties to this neighborhood, just minutes from downtown Orlando. PAM goals include partnering with the Maitland Historical Society and the Maitland Art Center to build a thing of beauty that all can admire and come together to build. M3 small groups perform every Sunday at Lake Lily Park for the Maitland Farmers Market. This venue provides opportunities for a variety of talents from Maitland and its surrounding communities. M3 has performed for the Market since the event started at Quinn Strong Park in Maitland. MSO puts on Spring and Holiday concerts at the First Presbyterian Church of Maitland. In the fall of 2008 MSO performed an outdoors evening concert at the Maitland Rotary Arts Festival. MSO is available for other special performances that have a large enough facility to accommodate the 90 or so volunteer musicians. Maitland Poets and Writers (MPW) is the newest group PAM brings to the community. Local literary talents will help foster the growth of literary arts and provide opportunities for the public to come and experience the joy of creative writing. Maitland Stage Band (MSB) formed in the summer of 2009. Concerts are planed for the fall.
